This Week in PR

Are you making a major faux pas with a journalist? Is “the Force” with your PR strategy? Are your social networks ready for a crisis? Check out the Hoffman team’s favorite PR blog posts and articles from this week:

  • The relationship between PR professionals and journalists is symbiotic at best … and at worst is damaged beyond repair. PR Newser rounded up the top 10 PR mistakes that journalists hate most to help PR folks improve their relationships with journalists. One of the easiest things to avoid doing is calling a reporter the wrong name, or worse, leaving the XXX in the spot where the reporter’s name is supposed to be. It’s a simple mistake that could lead to your next pitch going straight to junk mail tomorrow.
  • Are you pumped to bring out your inner geek and see the new Star Wars movie? So is PR Daily. In fact, the team thinks that PR professionals can even learn a thing or two from Master Yoda and the gang. One of our favorite lessons from the classic space fantasy series is striving to be a Rebel and not a Clone. Thinking outside of the box and not doing what every other brand is doing can be crucial to your success. Strategically thinking about how you can stand out in a positive way is what your client wants to see. Who says you can’t learn anything by watching movies?
  • As the year winds down, it’s natural to reflect on the things we have learned from 2015. The Meltwater PR blog listed the 30 most brilliant social media campaigns of the year. They break the campaigns into different platforms including Facebook, Pinterest, Vine, Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, Emoji, Spotify and Periscope. If you’re looking for inspiration, take a look at Tom’s #withoutshoes Instagram campaign or perhaps CNN’s content discovery section on Snapchat.
  • More than 8 in 10 digital device users will stop engaging with content that is too long or hard to view across devices. Bulldog Reporter sent this not-so-sweet wakeup call to content creators in its latest article on consumers that demand brands to entertain them. How can you combat these problems? Using a mix of humor, a good technical team to solve formatting issues and getting average customers to endorse the content are all good places to start.
  • Crisis communications is never fun, but the Cision PR Blog offers five ways that you can optimize your process. Cision shares the five ways that your social networks can be improved for crisis communication messaging. Things like pinning the most important/recent update on the situation to the top of your Facebook page and paying for social distribution can make sure that everyone is current on the latest news and can see that the company is addressing the problem, whatever it may be!
